Risk Factors

There are factors that can make a person more susceptible to gum disease:
  • Smoking - a very significant risk factor
  • Diabetes – if uncontrolled
  • Genetic susceptibility – gum disease can run in the family and it can present as a more severe condition
  • Medications – some medications can cause dry mouth and reduce the flow of saliva, other medications can cause swollen gums making it hard to keep clean
  • Other medications can cause swollen gums, making it hard to keep clean.
